I wish I could say things have drastically improved since my last email, but it seems the world has only become more chaotic.
Over the past two weeks, I've found myself practicing more mindfulness. The more unsettling the world around me is, the more I need to slow down and take a few deep breaths. It's less about practicing stillness, or forcing myself to be calm, than it is about checking in more frequently and noticing when my shoulders are hiked up to my ears or my breathing is short and shallow.
This is such an important moment astrologically for setting intentions for your future. Where do you want to be at the end of the summer? Six months from now? A year from now?
There is no better time to dream about the future you want for yourself.
I drew the 10 of Cups for our new moon reading, which feels particularly appropriate for a Cancer new moon. This card asks us to observe the ways we are comfortable receiving love, and the areas where we struggle to feel worthy of it.
This is a time for us to look at our networks and see how our loved ones take care of us, and how we like to take care of them. But I encourage you to take it a step further and ask yourself why certain types of love are hard for you to accept. How has your inability to accept that love created conflict in your life?
The sun and moon both in Cancer offer us unique insights into our deepest emotional insecurities. While that comes with discomfort, it also brings tremendous clarity.
The 10 of Cups asks you to embrace this deep honesty with yourself so that you can move forward as supported as possible through these chaotic times.
Wishing you a fruitful new moon.

three cards from the phantomwise tarot face down on a wood slab
New Moon in Cancer - This full moon is a total reset. This is a great time to reflect on whether the goals you came into the year with are the ones you want to continue to pursue. This is a time for recognizing the strength in being vulnerable and honest wiht yourself. It's only through uncovering the deepest truth of our hearts that we can understand what will make us feel fulfilled.
Take a breath and choose the card you feel most drawn to. The card you choose represents how you can best embrace quiet reflection.
8 of swords, 2 of swords, and page of cups from the phantomwise tarot
REVEAL TIME - The card you chose represents how you can best embrace quiet reflection.
8 of Swords - This card is calling you to throw off the binds that have been holding you back, which are, in this case, self-made. Unfortunately, sometimes the rules we make to keep ourselves safe are the same guidelines that keep us from getting to what we want. Embracing reflection means looking at the ways self-doubt has kept you from taking chances. Don't allow the fear of failure to keep you from going after what you want.
2 of Swords - Some decisions require a pause. You're probably eager to have the answers, to know how it will all work out, to keep pushing toward what you want. But this is a signal to grant yourself the gift of time. Sit with the options until you can feel which path forward is best for you, not just in your mind's eye, but in your body.
Page of Cups Rx - Now is the time to be curious about the feelings bubbling up in unexpected moments. These emotions hold the key to true fulfillment. Pay attention to the needs that are not being met by your loved ones, and consider how you can meet those needs yourself, or ask for support when you can't.
THE POISON DAUGHTER COVER REVEAL:
The cover reveal for THE POISON DAUGHTER was in my last newsletter, and I've been blown away by the response to that and the blurb reveal.
I'll have the case cover reveal coming soon. It's so stunning. I'm really excited to share. This standalone dark fantasy romance is coming October 3, 2025. The preorder is live, and there will be some fun goodies for preorders closer to release. So hang on to your receipts.
If you are interested in an ARC and you are not already on my street team, you can fill out the interest form here.
TBR Stack:
Wish by Sara Flanagan - I love a story about a woman taking revenge, and this one is right in my wheelhouse. Check out a snippet of the blurb about this one-night stand gone wrong below.
When Mora met Dother she expected a one-night tryst, but the man she grew to love had a different idea. He intended to keep her at any cost. Even if that meant binding her to a flask and cursing her to grant the wishes of any who held it. Though Dother meant it when he swore Mora would never truly be rid of him, he didn’t anticipate the monster she would become in the name of vengeance.
You can click the gorgeous cover to check it out on Kindle Unlimited.

What I'm Writing:
THE POISON DAUGHTER - Line Edits
I am in the last few chapters of line edits for THE POISON DAUGHTER, and the end is in sight. Writing a book is a marathon and not a sprint. I've learned this lesson over and over, but it's still hard when you want what's on paper to match what was in your head.
I'm excited to get through these last few chapters, and I also have one scene to add to the book. I'm just trying to find the right spot for it.
Next week it will be off to edits and a final consistency read-through, and then it's pretty much done. This one has been living in my brain for so long. I can't believe it's almost out in the world, but I'm also very excited.
Once I pass it off to my lovely editor, I will switch back to Ballad and finally finish out that draft. I think it will be good for me to get back into the Fable Song world for two drafts in a row. It will be nice to focus, and I'm a lot clearer on the stories now and how to connect to each other than I was even a few months ago.
Villains & Vixens Event Preorder:
Villains and Vixens Preorders
My preorder for Villains and Vixens is up. You can click the image above to access it.
I will have hardcovers and paperbacks of all of my books. Sadly, I will not have any event special editions for REASONS. But I'm trying to come up with some other fun goodies to offer.
If you are planning to purchase books from the event, I BEG you to preorder.
It's really hard to estimate demand for events, and I'm always guessing, so the only way to guarantee you get what you want is to preorder.
You do not have to buy books there if you are bringing your own with you. I will sign any of my books you bring from home.
Last year, I attended Imaginarium as my first event ever. It was such an amazing experience, and I'm thrilled to be returning in June 2026. I'll be opening up preorders sometime next year, and I'm excited to see all of you and a bunch of my author friends.

Sheila Reads and writes I hope this email finds you... It didn't feel appropriate to say happy full moon. I hope you are surviving as best you can, given the truly harrowing political climate in the US and around the world. Things feel quite heavy these days. I have a big birthday coming up in August, and I can't help but reflect on how different I thought the world would look by now and how, despite my considerable privilege, it still feels like I'm struggling at almost 40 years old. This is...
Sheila Reads and writes Happy New Moon! I'm going to keep our reading brief today because I wrote a huge craft section. This Taurus new moon is challenging us to embrace the frustration that wells up in response to our own stagnation. It's reminding us that we can't get to a new place by doing the same things we've been doing all along. Changing our negative habits means confronting them and then doing something different, even if we go about it imperfectly. I pulled the 9 of Cups for our...
Sheila Reads and writes Happy Full Moon! A LEGACY OF STARS is officially out in the world on the same day that THE LOST GOD is two years old. I really went for it in the second generation of it all. I can't believe it's been two years and six books. I've learned so much, and my mind is blown looking back at how much has changed in just a short period of time. A friend who is getting ready to publish her first book asked me the other day what advice I would give to someone who is just starting...
